What Americans have you met that pronounced it bay-tah? Northerners?

don't go giving us mid-atlantic-ers a bad pronunciation name. I always say "bee-ta".
and besides, "bay-tans" just sounds much weirder than "bee-tans"

I know "bee-ta" is correct, but I just can't reconcile it with "beta" as in "beta carotine" or "beta testing"
