c'EST UN VELO.
I hate this keyboard - on my work one I've removed the caps lock and power buttons (why did anyone EVER build a keyboard with a 'power' button?) but it might devalue my laptop a wee bit.

to answer your question......
back years ago, computers were big, noisy and bulky, so they were often hidden away in another room, so the simple way to start them up was a power button on the keyboard. Nowadays its used for "sleep" and hibernation shutdowns
or to annoy hamfisted typists who hit them by mistake :-)
