To be honest, every single animation package out there is going to be awkward to get your head around at first - there is no realy easy option.
You might want to try Flash (which also gives you the option of making longer movies with sound too) but if you do, I highly recommend getting a beginners book. Flash is great, but it can be a complete headfuck.
Regardless of what I animate in though, everything I make involves Imageready at some point. If only for the fantastic optimisation options.
