Although not at all as gory as the pre-press has made out. Couldn't really see what it did to merit an 18 certificate, in all honesty. The songs are MUCH better than those in Corpse Bride though, which is surprising given how ace Danny Elfman usually is. He kinda dropped the ball on that one, I can't help but feel.. :/

I thought The Corpse Bride was brilliant! But having said that, I hadn't seen Nightmare yet when I saw The Corpse Bride. I'm sure it's all relative. I Love Elfman! If you ever listen to Classical Music, listen to Shostakovich. Elfman has picked a lot of stuff up from that man....

I'm a total Burton freak, he can do no wrong in my eyes. But given that Corpse Bride was essentially *about* the songs, they just weren't that great - nothing in the league of Nightmare's What's This?, for example.
Sweeney is ace, though...highly recommended, just can't see why it's not a 15.
By the way, check out Elfman's first band, (The Mystic Knights Of The) Oingo Boingo - they're incredible. They did an amazing b-movie called The Forbidden Zone, if you ever get a chance...man, that's a trip. (*u*)

Like what I've heard, but Bach (who I'm a big fan of) is more an influence on Sweeney Todd. :)

but I guarantee that if you listen to more Shostakovich youll see far more links in that. I saw Valery Gergiev conducting the whole of Shos's work with the London Symphony Orchestra over his year as "temp" conductor with the LSO. It was absolutely astonishing. A lot of the latrr stuff I couldnt get my head round, but it was still amazing!
