Any phrase where the words can be used in the same order but a different meaning needs a hyphen to relieve ambiguity. 'Kick off your shoes' etc

Basically English people use a hyphen and Americans just remove the space, but leaving a space between the two words in unequivocally wrong.

# Well I'd say a defintion by the cambridge dictionary, I could scan in an actual page from an Oxford concise if I could be bothered, is as watertight as watertight can be in language.
And anyone who disagrees with a University which spends its time researching the etymology and usage of modern and historic English is obviously an idiot.
