Can anybody recommend a free/OSS program for generating synthetic speech?
I'm not looking for realistic human voices as such; more in the line of Stephen Hawking, Daleks, Sparky the Piano etc.
edit: cheers for replies, but I'm looking for something a bit more sophisticated than Sam and it needs to be stand-alone.

OK, it's not free but it's the best thing since sliced bread. I also use Vocaloid for realistic vocal harmonies but that's not free either.

I have no idea what this is like but it came up googling free voice synthesizer
