I'm not half as insulting about atheists as you are about people with faith though.

i am mildly contradictory on this one actually:
i detest religion and the inhumanity in brings upon man.
BUT:
i love free society and so i must support your freedom to believe whatever you like.
you may not be insulting about atheists, but a lot of religious people are. we tend to have to fight our corner pretty hard; mainly cos we are fighting mysticism and irrationality which takes a lot of convincing.
its a tricky balancing act!

and they're generally (the ones I know) a very 'live and let live' sort of bunch. The only real closed minded negativity (bordering on 'you're a complete mentally retarded cunt if you believe this thing which doesn't affect me at all', sort of like what you said up there) has come from atheists. Even when it's easier to say 'I don't believe in the same thing, but never mind'.
You can believe whatever you like, and I'll certainly not throw insults at you for it. In the same way that I won't call you a nigger or a queer.
Having said that, you obviously feel very strongly about it. I can't fathom why, but you do. So well done for at least having an opinion.

the most easy-going Christians ever (of which I am nominally one)
"Och weel, uf Jesus wir here, he'd huv hud a wee dram an a'"

Now I'm happy for them to believe what they want, but I refuse to have someone almose insult me for saying i'm on the side of SCIENCEā¢.....

Thank you for reminding me what to buy on payday, otherwise it'd just be another crime novel.

as it's so...alien to me. I was raised very liberally.

isn't without it's own problems. Everyone has to have a bit of a bad side to their personality. I'm a complete arsehole, but I don't use other people's opinions as an excuse for it.

having said that it does affect me; laws are made by religious people that outlaw things (example: homosexuality until 40 years ago or abortion in America right now), wars are started by religions (perhaps less Christians now - but you guys had your moments) so it does affect me and I find the idea that the murder of a man 2000 years ago can inspire good in people now either ludicrous or insane.
please note: I'm just spelling out my opinion and justifying my beliefs (something everyone should be able to do).

due to the fact that I don't agree with either of them. Certainly, if it were up to me both things wouldn't exist.

i certainly wasn't laying the blame solely on you!
i was merely illustrating the idea that religion does affect me even if i do not believe in it.
anyway i think thats enough of this debate for the time being.
if your interested i recommend Thomas Paine's 'The age of reason' as a good book to have a read through - a very considered and well written argument both for and against religion. A book everyone should read as it is very applicable to modern times.

i support peoples right to believe what ever they wish, just i as i support my right to call them witless fucktards for believing in a magical bogey man who may reward or punish you after you die depending on how you abided by some shoddily reported rules from 2000 years ago.
