edit: i used to know how to get accented Es and such using only an ordinary keyboard. can anyone enlighten me?

On a PC, go to 'start' up to 'run' and then type in charmap. All of the symbols will then appear

on the bottom right hand side of the charmap window it shows you the keyboard shortcuts. Alternatively, if you use symbol in word then you can create your own keyboard short cuts
