nah
just multiple layers of text in different shades. Then select a shade of colour, inverse the selection and delete that from that text layer. Repeat for each shade and job done.
Takes far far longer to get the text in to the picture than it does to do the effect.

If you use clipping mask, it'll be a lot easier.
And then burn or dodge to get the desired shadow/light.

easiers you say?
it's only taking about 5 minutes to get the effect right. It's the bloody hour of getting the text in there in the first place that's annoying!

wouldn't it be simpler to copy the text off t'internet
paste into an editor
format it
then paste it into photoshop
then wang the pic behind it and change the text layer mode thing to make the pic show through it?

Yes.
It should take longer to find the text and copy it as an image than it does to have the software produce the image effect for you.

Put the pic on the layer above the text, set it to clipping mask, and then the only part of the image that shows through is that with text below it.

I could do it that way
but the way I'm doing it only takes a few minutes anyway (with fiddling to get exactly the right shades and areas). It's a method I'm comfortable with, so may not be the quickest or best but the end results look OK I think.
I'll give that method a go though. Cheers :)

I'm not a massive Queen or Freddie fan myself (can only profess to liking their music rather than loving it) but he is an instantly recognisable character and hence the choice to do him next.
So to speak.
