I still play from time to time with the lead guitarist. One day I'll finish my jukebox and bombard /board with songs

But it involves
* Getting Vista to stop sucking at audio
* Getting Vista to stop sucking at audio
* Cleaning up the bassline on a few songs
* Sequencing drums
* Getting Vista to stop sucking at audio
and
* Sequencing more bloody motherpissing drums

for mixing, Goldwave for direct wave editing though I try and do as little of that as possible these days, and Sibelius for composition. And actually Cubase for drum sequencing at the minute, which may be one of my issues.

it looks as if I may have to switch to vista when I buy a new system. I run Cubase and Kontact. What's the problem with the audio in Vista?

The drivers are actually fine but the main enormous irritation is that you can't record a sound that's playing anymore. Apparently people could record a radio broadcast from the internet, which is akin to raping grandmothers in Microsoft's eyes. Given the amount that I actually code up in MIDI and loop across, this really irritated me.
I've also had programs crap out on me once or twice -- Sibelius was very good at doing that for a while.

Granted I've just had to buy Sony Acid pro 7 because the SQL database for the media manager in version 6 did not work with vista, but now that's fixed, Soundforge and Reason 3 work perfectly.
