I always thought Buffalo was the common term and Bison was the educated peoples term.

"American Buffalo" are actually Bison. Buffalo are from Africa and Asia.

But what is a name? Easier to just rename it to "Dinner plus fur coat" (unless you are vegetarian... but then you would be odd as you'd have more in common with a Bison...)
