It has it's place but it'd not going to replace photoshop for the kind of style I like to work in.

But I'd suggest that if you buy a few DVD's from the Corel Masters series and learn more about it as a tool you'll get more out of it and soon consider Photoshop to be very poor in comparison when it comes to actual painting. ( I love photoshop for illustration but nowadays I don't even consider it for painting or sketching ).
Horses for courses but there is a lot to discover in painter and the more you learn the better it gets.
Painter is as close as you are ever going to get to putting paint on canvas without the mess.
edit:/ Allow me to spam some of my painter efforts.

because I like the mess :) If I want to paint or sketch I paint and sketch and then use the scanner or the camera to get them into the machine. Personally thats what I like about the new versions of all these bits of graphic software, there are so many ways to do stuff. So we can go back to being artists and use the tools to create what we want rather than being defined by the tools.

A lot of them are rubbish, some of them though are certainly useful in the 'process'

..but B3TA is more about the ideas we come up with rather than a showcase for awesome art skills. I am sure people must get fed up with my numpty arty farty stuff filling up B3TA everyday. If filters help someone get that joke/message across then I say good luck to them, obviously if someone thinks just using a filter is something to be proud of, then of course they are a bit of a cunt.

I don't even have a problem with filters. I do, as you say, get the hump when somebody passes someone else's image through a few filters then posts it here in a new thread as if they have accomplished something.
I don't mind if people accuse me of using filters ( if you count the odd blur on layers and some texturing then I do use them ) as I know how much drawing and brushing I do on the old Wacom and I'm happy that I created something either from new or took a reference and put my take on it.
The thing with filters tat gets me is some people are happy to take a photo, click a filter and say 'look what I made' and that just makes me embarrassed for them. It is no accomplishment to know how to click a couple of tool buttons.
