vorticity is a measure of how much a fluid flow is 'rotating'. (Eg water down a plug hole is a vortex.) The time evolution of a fluid, with some initial vorticity, is governed by the stream function vorticity equations.
The animation is the predicted fluid flow for starting off with an initial condition of four vorticies, two pointing up (the redish ones) and two pointing down (blue). With some random perturbation (noise). I'll see if I can make the whole thing three D to show it better.
