three british squaddies decide to change their luck by pretending to be american and getting sent home to the wrong place. they travel by cargo ship to chicago, where they immediately become involved with the local mob. squaddie A falls in love with the boss' daughter, but realises his prospects are tempered by the probability of losing his breathing rights at the hands of her jealous father. squaddie C goes missing, squaddie B becomes a monk. a neighbouring mob conducts an assault on the first mob, and seriously injures the boss. squaddie A realises that his death would leave his daughter unguarded, but in the end decides to save him. squaddie C turns up working as an agent for the invading mob. they both go round to the monastery to rally squaddie B to action, but he refuses. A and C plot to stitch up both mobs and take over both groups' rackets, but on the night of the heist they are uncovered and face death. at this point squaddie B bursts in with guns blazing, saves them both, and they all go back to yorkshire where they wind up the rest of their days as old men in the pub, telling their story to unbelieving youngsters
