Have you got quicktime pro? You can export the animation as an image sequence using that. Pain though. Alternatively somehow convert the .gif to a .mov, and then you should be able to import it?

Yeah probably the best solution.
I think they've done it so you've got to buy Fireworks if you want to do animations, bastards. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

There must be hundreds of free programs
that allow you to open a gif for editing then either save it as a psd or export all frames to layers. That would take a minute then you can do all the rest in photoshop. It's not that I don't want you to use fireworks. I just know that you will hate it.

on a mac
Change the animated .GIF file you want to open into .MOV file. eg. boxcat.gif to boxcat.mov the Import Video Frames to Layers function will recognize it as a video file and will open it as animated sequence.
