Have you got quicktime pro? You can export the animation as an image sequence using that. Pain though.

Alternatively somehow convert the .gif to a .mov, and then you should be able to import it?

I think they've done it so you've got to buy Fireworks if you want to do animations, bastards. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

that allow you to open a gif for editing then either save it as a psd or export all frames to layers.
That would take a minute then you can do all the rest in photoshop.

It's not that I don't want you to use fireworks. I just know that you will hate it.

Change the animated .GIF file you want to open into .MOV file.

eg. boxcat.gif to boxcat.mov

the Import Video Frames to Layers function will recognize it as a video file and will open it as animated sequence.
