you've never heard that one.... it came about as a fair way to measure out the rum... one was required to plunge one's fist into the barrel and however much rum was displaced was the measure they were given... it's a very good technique.

that gets you 5 lashes... although the practice was taken out of use when people started injecting their hands with piss which made them swell to almost twice their size meaning that the sailor in question was too drunk and too cack handed to do their job properly.
