looking at all the listed buildings, one of whom muttered something about a seriously huge fountain in Glasgow or Edinburgh; I forgot which, I was simply nodding at the stage

Oddly enough
I *have* stayed at the Buchanan. Twice. I liked it, and it is very handy for the shops.

I spent 4 years in each city, and each has it's good points
Edinburgh : nice to look at, small enough to walk around, but bloody windy
Glasgow : very lively, good clubs/music, but has a big fuck off motorway down the middle.
