Now, here's something that I don't get - the F-14 is bloody huge, yet, despite the aircraft being closer than the deckman at the right of the picture, he must either be massive or the aircraft is very much smaller. Just me being a spacker or does it look funny?

i think it is exceptionally dodgy perspective.
camera has managed to really flatten the image.

Notice how the deck behind is very clearly defined, yet the sea is blurred from the jet wash? Looks like the aircraft is actually behind the ship. Photoshopped?

Yep. I got a bigger version and it's clearly a dude.
They usually have a little bunker to the side of the deck so they don't get flambeed on take off.
