And my pun-gland must have been squeezed this morning as this appears to have seeped out. I'm putting it here out of the way. It's full of nutricious toapy goodness.

TJ;
does anyone know of a free piece of video editing software that you don't have to be a professional to figure out how to use? All I want is to be able to extract a small section from an AVI file to make an animated GIF, and Microsoft Movie Maker is being shit (as always).

Vdubmod.
virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/ Super easy. I then use JASC Animation shop to turn it into an animated gif from an avi.

Thanks
For some reason Movie Maker will never let me save anything once I've finished editing.

It's a simple program.
You just select the bits you don't want with the "home" and "end" buttons and press delete. Voilá!

Unfortunately, it crashes every time I try to open the original AVI file I want to extract from.
I think I'm going to have to convert the entire movie to JPG and just pick the frames I want.

VDubmod?
Sounds like you might have a codec issue.
