only used (a less than legal copy of) photoshop a couple of times... couldn't get on with it.

When using gimp , I always have TaskManager running to monitor cpu useage
If you interupt Gimp when it's busy doing something, it can sometimes crash. Some jobs take up to 45+ seconds (eg converting an animation to a gif)

I meant creating an animated gif from multiple layers
but Gimp will split video files (and small clips from a larger video file) into multiple images and you can then convert them to an animated gif
Open "new"
Click "video"
click "split video into frames"
