Was it really a bang if noone was there to hear it?
Or no air to bang, for that matter?

Hmmm... Air, or at least the elemental units that make it, start forming at just that point.
As to no observers... maybe. Might have been a few left overs of the previous epoch
around to go "OH SHI-!" just as the universe torched off. If there was they are gone
as gone gets, so I doubt anyone will get the chance to ask. [/;-D

Heheh
Well, technically, I believe the universe was packed in one singularity, so there would be no place for any leftover outside observers at all. Possibly. I don't know.
Rumour has it it was all even before my grandfather's time.

Speed of that packing is interesting.
That is to say speed perceived by someone.
Big crunch area is sometimes more interesting
than the bang parts. One might not even notice
space collapsing until the proximity broke the
normal flow physics and light getting like jelly.

I find this theme very interesting indeed
So far, any experiments of trying to turn photons into jelly has only got me a jarfull of luminous marbles

Oh dear, luminous marbles!
That's not good, it means in your local frame the
minimum solar radius is getting really fucking small!

dont they say that they hear the 'echo'
from big bang? it one of the pieces of proof of big bang
altho i prob didnt understand the details i heard it on radio 4...
