As to no observers... maybe. Might have been a few left overs of the previous epoch
around to go "OH SHI-!" just as the universe torched off. If there was they are gone
as gone gets, so I doubt anyone will get the chance to ask. [/;-D

Well, technically, I believe the universe was packed in one singularity, so there would be no place for any leftover outside observers at all. Possibly. I don't know.
Rumour has it it was all even before my grandfather's time.

That is to say speed perceived by someone.
Big crunch area is sometimes more interesting
than the bang parts. One might not even notice
space collapsing until the proximity broke the
normal flow physics and light getting like jelly.

So far, any experiments of trying to turn photons into jelly has only got me a jarfull of luminous marbles

That's not good, it means in your local frame the
minimum solar radius is getting really fucking small!
