Actually when you watch it it's not far from looking exactly like cardboard cutouts with a Depth of Field effect

They filmed it with 2d cameras
then added the 3d in post, when avatar did well.

That would explain why it's so hit and miss - mostly miss
looks like I chose the wrong film for my first look at the new 3D.
