
It's also possible that he's mumbling knicker (as in female underwear or possibly thief) which is what I recall thinking the word was when I was 7.
I imagine there might have been some uneducated racism when it was bastardised from the original Tiger text, but I'd guess what he was doing was pure unthinking repetition from his childhood.

he's built up the image of an old bigot for so long, that there isn't much in the "he couldn't be racist" camp to counter-balance any sleight claims like this.
I personally felt he mumbled it more with an air of "it's political correctness gone mad that I can't just say it" than out of good manners (or, indeed out of racism).
