If it obviously looks like HDR, you are doing your HDR wrong. The idea is to improve realism not give a 'look'. (rant mode off)

It can be very tedious, like CGI where everything's super sharp and bright - but some will be OK too. Done well, it's smashing!
I did a rare HDRish pic just earlier today, but one exposure brightened up from RAW in three steps and nothing merged. Just doesn't have quite the visual impact of HDR.

Have some flat ND filters but not graduated. I've also dabbled in mucking about with a single shot to improve the range but so far haven't managed to get it to look decent enough.
