Limiting myself to speaking about what I know: Rail travel, short or long across the Netherlands and Germany is always a fraction of the price of the UK.
...plus in germany you can buy day tickets for unlimited travel within huge regions that are as cheap as piss.

It's 4 quid for a paper ticket from Covent Garden to Leicester Square. That's for 45 seconds of tube ride. Bargain.
