This is a normal post Oddly enough, despite having hung round the internet with lots of people who seem to regard this programme
with near religious awe. I have never yet watched a single second of it. All I could tell you (and a lot of this is being extrapolated from this vid) is that it looks like a wild west/sci fi mash up?
Is it worth me checking out or shall I save my time for more important things?

This is a normal post Yep, SciFi in space, like the cartoon Bravestar ;o)
Some episodes drag a little, but they were only just finding their feet. The cast chemistry was good. The movie version tied up the ends nicely, but it could have been so much more with more time.

...it's not a Sci-Fi in space, it's a western in space. It's your favourite cowboy series from your childhood, it just happens to be set in space in the future. And everyone speaks Mandarin. Don't worry.
I don't feel that any of the episodes dragged - I feel that each one was a masterpiece. And the film was epic and I can't watch it without crying at least three times. And ho doesn't enjoy shouting "Ni ta ma de tien xia suo yuo de ren dou gai xi" when things go a bit wrong?

This is a normal post I managed to get Firefly and Serenity into a Film exam answer on westerns
dealing with manifest destiny and such like.. think i might have even mentioned Easy Rider aswell, I may have been pushing the boundaries of what you can call a western a bit, got a good mark though..

This is a normal post No,
It's fine.

The Western genre sometimes portrays the conquest of the wilderness and the subordination of nature in the name of civilization or the confiscation of the territorial rights of the original inhabitants of the frontier.

Now, tell me that doesn't apply to the terraforming of the new worlds, and the Alliance...

This is a normal post ^this^
We took a mate who had never seen Firefly to see Serenity at the pictures and there's enough exposition (and very cleverly done) that it doesn't matter if you've never seen the series. He loved the film and immediately went out to buy the series because he needed to see more of the 'verse!

And I know it's naughty to suggest - but it's fairly trivial to get the Divx rips of the show. I own three copies of the film - standard DVD, super duper amazing DVD and HD-DVD version.

To me, it's the most important television show ever,

This is a normal post They had an absolute gem on their hands and they sold it down the river (not tam :( )
The only reasons some of the episodes seemed to drag I think it's because of how short the entire thing ended up being. Some of the episodes were more filler/one shots that get peppered around to give the overall plot time to breath but they didn't get a chance to do a full series. So you have some of the slower change of pace episodes that introduce a few things here and there that never get developed, and end up seeming slow in comparison to the episodes that did move things along.

I've got a Jayne hat :D

This is a normal post So do I!
...and it was a present from my mother!!

I couldn't name my favourite episode. Probably "Shindig" or "Our Mrs. Reynolds". Least favourite would probably be "War Stories" and "Objects in Space" but that's not to say I dislike them - I just don't love them as much as the other ones.

This is a normal post Jubal Early!
I really liked 'Objects in Space'. I'd probably say that was my fave along with 'Our Mrs.Reynolds' or 'Out of Gas'. It's the same thing though. I can safely say I enjoyed every episode, and although it's only a short series I enjoyed it more consistantly from episode to episode than any other series I've watched, regardless of genre.

Would have loved to see Early brought back as a reoccuring villian is if had gone the distance. But no Fox fucked it.

Am I lion? I don't think of myself as a lion. You might as well though, I have a mighty roar...

For me:
Trek
Firefly
Stargate (SG1&SGA)
Babylon 5

Trek is the biggie for me - my parents met thru the trek.

I don't count Firefly as a sci-fi show, it just happens to be set in space!

Stargate is obviously a huge amount of fun. but Babylon 5 never gripped me. I just never could believe that huge (low-resolution) station could have been run from such a tiny ops room...

Trek's where it's at. The only one I struggled with was Voyager.

It's definately a western set in space, or a character drama set in space, but I think it does the whole allegory thing that sci fi is so good at as well. Better than some actually because there's distinct lack of technobabble.

Babylon 5 takes some sticking with. The payoff at the end is immense though.

Stargate is fun, and they had a good character chemistry. The latest one though, Universe, is dire.

I watched all of the new V recently. That's pretty good. I think I need to get the old mini series now.

This is a normal post Now that's interesting...
...because I really loved Voyager. I didn't love DS9 (I don't know, I think it's a gay thing - all gays are contracted to dislike that show) but there were some cracking individual episodes (Trials and tribble-ations stands out).

I think I loved Voyager because you could relate to the backstory. TNG wasn't really "about" anything, whereas in voyager the premise was they were stranded and wanted to get home. It did take then about two and a half years to find their feet, and they lost it a bit towards the end, but seasons 3 - 5 were awesome.

Of course, I think the best Trek was 'enterprise' because it was so low-tech and in some ways, I felt like some of the technology was achievable now. And Linda Park (Hoshi) is hot and Connor Trineer (Trip) is cute...

This is a normal post DS9 was my fave to be honest.
Mainly cos it went with the darker stories, actually had plot arcs that lasted more than two episodes, and got generally grim. Most of the characters were cracking as well. Sisko was great, I think Avery Brooks is a fantastic actor. I'd sell a leg to see him do shakespeare.

I have too many fave DS9 episodes to list. Basically season 4 onwards.

No love from the gays? Is that because of the Dax bit or because Siddig and Robinson were aiming to play the gay angle on the Bashir/Garak relationship but were told by the studio to tone it down (remove it basically)? Or are there other reasons?

Voyager was a good idea but it all went wrong. They all got along too well too quickly. They didn't know what to do with Janeway, or Kes etc. Year of Hell was good though.

I liked Enterprise once they got towards the end of the second season. The Xindi plot, though full of holes, was rather grand. And the mirror universe episodes :O ! Awesome.

This is a normal post It's okay.
But nearly so imaginative and original as people seem to think. Fans rave about the whole 'cowboys in space' thing as though it's some sort of totally mind-blowing new paradigm. But it's been done before ('Cowboy Beebop' and 'Bravestar' for starters).
