No matter how smart we think we are, when surprised by a threat coming towards us
we still do the automatic thing and run away directly opposite it's direction, not the perpendicular, which would have been the sensible thing to do.

I think perhaps you're not conversant with circuit layout
Armco to your left, wire fence to your right. Where do you run, toward the car, or away from it?

ashally, that's incorrect.
For something like a falling tree, perpendicular would be correct, but for something like a flipping car, away from is better. The reason being that with every impact on the floor, there's a chance the car will lose it's forward momentum. By running away from it you increase the distance it must travel to reach you, and increase the chances it will stop before hitting you.
Of course, the people running from the car were not actually thinking this - they were thinking "FUKFUKFUKFUKFUKFUKFUK"

Not as good as the time I crashed
into your mums FANNY!
Wise choice
I certainly feel a lot happier knowing that if I were to ever decide to fling my Leon ten feet into the air and flip it over the barrier, I'd probably be OK.
Actually, I suspect these are the TDI models, I drive a petrol. Perhaps I'll ease off a bit...
