It's one of the bits of my philosophy degree that I still think about from time to time. Basically I don't believe for a moment that insects, arachnids, worms, slugs, snails, oysters etc have any kind of consciousness, they simply don't have the processing power. Assuming they aren't conscious, they can't suffer.
It's impossible to test of course, but I reckon they are more akin to little robots carrying out actions without thought than like higher creatures.
I reckon pretty much any vertebrate can experience suffering, though a lot of people would probably disagree that reptiles are conscious. Some people would probably disagree about fish as well, notably vegetarians who eat fish. It seems pretty clear the octopi and squid are switched on as well.
So anyway yeah on that basis I don't reckon there's any cruelty involved in eating a live scorpion any more than there is eating a live oyster.
Feel free to disagree, no-one can prove it one way or the other for certain so it's a purely philosophical question really. And I'm not about to eat a scorpion alive or otherwise. But I do very much like eating oysters alive and i don't reckon there's anything wrong with that.

I have never understood vegetarians who eat fish, that's just like a tea totaler drinking only wine....

nice to see someone use some logic on the subject.
I feel some people aren't conscious either, they do such stupid things that they couldn't possibly all be concscious, just saying like...

I can tell you they are definitely conscious and anyone who disagrees is a cunt.
