I wonder if there is any research into what motivates these people to commit murder.
At some point the killer must feel that it is the only option to go guns-a-blazing and have nothing to loose. I suppose that this could be a long time in advance and give them time to think through the kill fest. It would be interesting to gain an insight into the route to the act.

charlie brooker link earlier today has the psychologist making the case that they are actively seeking the news coverage they generate
and that a big help would be to make the coverage local only and boring as hell.

I think that there's a fair bit.
Whether any of it's conclusive is a different matter.
I'm with you in a lot of this: there must be a strange sort of breaking point in a lot of these - a kind of despair (I can't think of a better word). Sometimes it's mental illness, for sure. Sometimes it's not. It's fascinating, though.
