KaC.
Apparently Ricky Gervais is 'appalled' by the inhumane treatment of a defenseless creature that doesn't have the mental ability to stick up for itself. *insert Pilkington gag here*.
Seriously though. This shit still goes on? Unbelievable.
(And yes, I'm well-aware that Karl Pilkington's a millionaire and not-nearly as daft as his highly-lucrative persona would suggest)

The comments are justifyably angry, and completely insane:
Sueklos: "Why on God's earth when there are so many sick people being locked up for rape, murder, terrorism, muggings, stabbings and the like can't we use them for experiments. It would free up space in overcrowded prisons and do the world a favour"

I've been trying to explain the facts of this to people, as the vast majority of them feel that their knowing absolutely bugger-all should be no impediment to loudly proclaiming that the scientists performing this research do not know what they're doing.
Ethical issues aside, the response to comments like that is that the experiments have to be performed on young animals whose visual systems are still developing. If you were doing it to humans it would have to be done on young children.

were they thrown over the bridge in the bag at that point?
no, probably not, they were probably restored to normal. the horror.

I work in an area related to this (though I don't do any experiments on animals). These experiments have been going on for decades. When Colin Blakemore took a stand on animal research in the 80s he was being persecuted for carrying out the precursors to these experiments.

I don't understand this. The scientists who perform these experiments actually do them in order to publish the results. How has the BUAV "uncovered evidence"? Do they mean that they look at articles which are published and see when people talk about testing on animals? It's hardly a secret.
