The punishment for leaving the EU? Death.
if you're a pregnant cow that is
Not going to wring my hands over the fate of a cow and a calf because I eat beef and drink milk.
However this has implications for the N.I. situation.
This either shows that the EU border is so fucking porous that a cow can stroll over and it's a joke that they're getting uppity over the situation and might as well leave it as it is.
Or that they take it so seriously there's no way we're going to satisfy their needs so might as well say fuck it. Ireland can put border controls up if it wants but we'll leave our side as it is thank you.

I predict a cow straying over a border in a remote area of Eastern Europe will have absolutely no implications on anything

That maybe true, but if it were to happen between Northern Ireland and Ireland the sky would definitely fall on our heads.

I've read the GFA many, many times. It's a very moo-ving document.

... or it could be that "the border"
is simply a metonym for the interaction of a whole range of customs, regulatory, and - maybe one day - trade regimes, made extra spicy by a history of low-level warfare in the area that has been kept to a minimum over recent years by certain guarantees about that border the robustness of which are now open to serious question.
But, y'know, plug it into your tedious anti-EU paranoia whichever way you like. Whatever makes you happy.
