and bong building was one of my weekend hobbies - I could have written a book on it. That second link you posted is a very nicely manufactured version of my magnum opus.
The 'percolator' effect was greater with mine though (I used a ping pong ball with hundreds of pin pricks in it). The description fails to mention the reason why it works though - smaller bubbles have a much lower surface area to volume ratio, and therefore get cooled by the water better, as the cooling effect only occurs at the edge of the bubble.
Surprising how many of the features they've used though - even the diffuser at the top. My bowl was the biggest piece of a socket set that I 'borrowed' from my dad's garage - the reasoning being that the large chunk of metal absorbs the heat of the lighter more effectively.
It's a shame I'm all grown up and can't stand the stuff that you put in them anymore... I could have made a career out of designing them.
