This is a question The Little Things

'Hullo chaps', bellows Richard McBeef, of 'the internet' fame. My boss has managed to make 'shown' into a two syllable word and it drives me round the fucking bend. Tell us about the little things that people around you do, which annoy you for more than they rationally should. Vent your spleen.

Using the word "monkey" when referring to an ape
Nothing to do with Discworld, it just pisses me off as stunningly ignorant.

I also got caught out by another similar animal-related confusion. Mrs Moon Monkey had often mentioned that she wanted a pet turtle. So one year, in another desperate attempt not to cock up the birthday present challenge, I surprised her with a full set up, including a fun little Musk turtle.

Turns out, in her home country they use the word Turtle as a chelonian catch-all. What she really wanted was a tortoise.

Anyone want a turtle?

What you bought was a terrapin.
Turtles live in the sea, you massive cunt. Why get upset about people calling apes monkeys, and then call a terrapin a turtle? The little thing that has pissed me off today is your post.

"Terrapin" is not a well-defined term
It was invented by people who use the word turtle incorrectly, because they realised that they actually needed a word that meant the wet ones.

I have a musk turtle and two mississippi map turtles. The word "terrapin", you'll notice, does not appear in these species names.

That's because they're American species.
If you're going to claim a turtle is a terrapin just because it comes from the US, then a tortoise is also a turtle.

They were subject to a Turtle Recall.
