This is a question Not-stalgia

Willenium tugs our sleeve and says: Tell us why the past was a bit shit. You may wish to use witty anecdotes reflecting your own personal experience.

OK, so explain this to me.
There are 3 reactions to Star Wars. These all happen in varying degrees, so for 'love it' also add 'like it', etc.

1. Love it. I'm in this category, grew up with it, happy to watch all 6 films, don't care about weak storylines / writing, it's a film full of characters I know very well.

2. Hate it. Saw one or two of them, didn't connect, think it's all overhyped crap. Fair enough, I think everything Bob Dylan ever did was shit, but clearly I'm missing something a lot of other people aren't.

3. People from group 2 or who have never seen any of them, complaining about people from group 1.

Why do these people exist?

You're missing an important 4th reaction here:
Normal people who have seen and enjoyed the films to a greater or lesser extent and then happily got on with the rest of their lives and enjoyed many other films without feeling the need to talk about them all the fucking time.

Option 4: people who may like or dislike Star Wars, but for whom it's not that big of a deal.
Of course, this group don't pop up in discussions about Star Wars.

Group 5
People who loved it when they were young, then grew up and hated it when they were older because it wasn't made for their age range.
(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 13:37, closed)
Group 6 - people who are indifferent to it, as it's just a film; an entertainment.
Q.V. - band fan loyalty.
(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 13:42, closed)
Groups 6 and 4 are the same.

(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 13:57, closed)
Racist.

(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 14:34, closed)
I'm putting them in group 1.
Having added the caveat about these covering ranges of reactions. Let's whittle mine down a little;

1. Love, like or at least do not dislike.

2. Do not like, may or may not have seen them.

3. Would belong in group 2 if not for the fact they need to have a go at group 1, or the films themselves.

I do agree though, probably the majority of people are indifferent.
(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 15:21, closed)
This doesn't work. Group 1 has to care enough about the films in order to upset Group 3 into having a go at them for it.

(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 15:25, closed)
OK, you can do your own version if you like.
Groups 1 and 2 are pretty much irrelevant anyway. The question is, why do people care if you like Star Wars, when they are either not interested or don't like the films themselves.

This is common - music produces similar nosepoking, but Star Wars seems particularly controversial.
(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 15:40, closed)
Probably because people go on and on about it like it's something.

(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 15:50, closed)
The inherent tribal nature of man, probably.
The same reason people wear t-shirts with HACKETT emblazoned on them, I suppose.
(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 16:19, closed)
Because they're called Ollie and are an absolute scream at parties?

I assumed it was Father Jack's fan club.
(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 17:16, closed)
So did i
I'd love to join Father Jacks fan club

Group 7 - spend far too much time arguing over how to categorise people in relation to a film.

(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 16:00, closed)
Group 8
Like to create extraneous groups of people.
(, Tue 3 Sep 2013, 17:13, closed)
4. people who try to put their detractors into categories in a vain attempt to justify their preoccupation with a mediocre film series from thirty years ago
