Books
We love books. Tell us about your favourite books and authors, and why they are so good. And while you're at it - having dined out for years on the time I threw Dan Brown out of a train window - tell us who to avoid.

Has anyone ever got to the end of Gravity's Rainbow?
Tried three times now and each time I've completely lost interest wading through what seems to be meaningless turgid tosh.
Is it worth reading? If so, can you post a summary of what happens, because I'm really not going to make a fourth attempt

Yes: twice.
I've still absolutely no idea what's going on there, though.

Yes. I shall try to type a love letter to Pynchon for posting later.

Yes
It's not quite as big an ordeal as getting to the end of "Against The Day" which seems to be three fairly good books mixed together in incomprehensible order.
But it's far harder than getting to the end of Mason and Dixon, or Vineland, both of which are splendid. Off the top of my head I can't think of another author with such varied writing styles. Possibly Don DeLillo.

another marmite choice
could not begin to care about what was going on but had a friend who adored it. If it doesn't work for you I doubt it will. When I was a teenage wanker, (the two terms are often synonymous,)I would have trudged on just to tick the box but life's too short and experience has beaten at least some of the pretentiousness out of me.
