it's all about reducing self will. When it comes to knowing what the right thing to do is, alkies are far better off trusting a magic sky fairy than using their own judgement, alledgedly.
Incidentally this step came this step came from the Psychiatrist Carl Jung - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Jung. One of the founder members of AA was under him for a year when Jung suggested that spirituality might fix him
