I'd like to be able to disable video embedding on /links,
I've only got a low-spec computer and it eats it right up.

assuming you are using firefox
go to the Tools tab.
-Click Options
-Click the contents tab
-Uncheck the boxes "Enable Javascript"
-Click Ok.

I'm not, I'm using Konqueror.
I do want to watch the videos, but only one at a time, when I click on them. If I disable Javascript, youtube doesn't work either. Plus I might need Javascript for other things.

Click 'Update your profile' at the top of the screen.
Scroll down and a bit below your icon selction there is an option 'Hide embedded videos on /links?'. Select Yes.

click in the browser bar and type 'www.amazon.co.uk. Then in the search bar type 'hammer'. Find one, buy it and then wait.
Once the hammer arrives use it to smash your worthless piece of shit computer into tiny pieces and the buy a proper one so no-one has to listen to your whinging
