Actually...Gearing is a genuine investment term for debt- if you increase your level of debt, then you increase the gearing. It's used to tweak profitability levels.

YesBut it fooled our politicians into thinking that our banks were nice and healthy rather than over-extended in ways that they themselves didn't really understand.
Calling it 'gearing' makes it sound good, just because the term is accepted doesn't make it right.
