We-ll,
I'm not sure that just because a new word does not follow the root etymologically it is a bad or unclear expression. I teach English as a Foreign Language and my students always seem to 'get' and remember -oholic words(if I remember correctly it is not usually -aholic). To them it 'makes sense'. I think they work quite well.
