Don't have a car story
Why not?

I don't own a car. I've never owned a car. I don't have a driving license. I don't even own a provisional driving license. I have had, maybe, 4 driving lessons in my life.

I have no interest in learning to drive. I have no use for a car except maybe twice a year. I have no need for ID that would necessitate getting a license.

So why, pray tell, do people consider me to be a bit of a freak for being like this? I have no desire to be a plumber or a paedophile or, even worse, a Daily Mail reader. Does all of that make me a freak as well?

If you live in a city and/or near work it probably makes a lot of sense. If you live in the countryside I'm bloody impressed!

I live in town but don't currently work. Even when I did, I still prefered walking an hour to get to work than driving/getting a lift or catching the bus.

Not a freak
But its a useful bit of paper to have, even if you have no intention of using it on a regular basis. Hireing a van to shift your stuff is always quicker and cheaper if you do have the required pink bit of paper. But as above each to their own.

I have neither a driver's license nor a television
so that must make me certifiable. Plus I work in the arse-end of nowhere - are there pills for this kind of thing?

Strangely enough
People don't have the same reaction when I mention that I don't own a TV. It's just when I say about not driving/not wanting to learn they have a weird reaction.

I didn't learn to drive till my late thirties.
And only because I had to but once you start driving you wonder how you coped before.

I don't and can't drive, and I don't watch television, either. Yet somehow, I manage to survive.

(Okay, we use the TV for DVDs and computer games, but thank God we're spared the perpetual eye-rapeage of visual tripe such as 'Strictly Cunts Dancing'.)

i don't drive, either
had one lesson before i was told my eyesight wasn't good enough. never really bothered me, although i would like to know the basics, just in case i ever do need a way to escape from zombies.

I'm in the same boat.
I've always relied on girlfriends and employers for transport.
It makes far more sense.

I would drive,
but I'm 15 minutes from work and 25 minutes from two city centres on (very frequent) public transport; having someone else do the driving takes all the stress out of commuting. Plus, given the ever-increasing cost of finance repayments, insurance, petrol etc. there's no way I can afford to run a car and have a roof over my head at the same time, not unless I wanted to live on two packs of Smartprice noodles a week.

Having your own car, like house ownership and marriage, is an indicator of your social status. If you evaluate these things purely on their practical merits and find them wanting, your views will be somewhat at odds with society in general; and as most people fear and hate anything outside their own sphere of existence, you will be regarded as an outcast. That's the way it goes.

Great. If I lived in Central London for instance, I'd not bother with a car, and hire one when the need took me. As for status symbols, not me. If its legal, and reliable, thats good enough for me. A working stereo is a bonus! Youngest ratter I've bought in teh past was 10 years old, oldest was built in '73. I drive 'em till they fall apart, weigh them in, get another.

Finance? Feck that. If I can't buy it for the cost of a weekend of sin, not worth the money

not driving wasnt an option where i grew up as the only man made thing i could see out my window was my shed the nearest bus stop was in the village 9 mile down the road

as for crap cars my first landy didnt have a back body on it for 4 months just a light board to keep her legal... fun times
