Smaug says: Ricky Gervais. Lesbian pr0n. Going into a crowded bar, purely because it's crowded. All these things seem to be popular with everybody else, but I just can't work out why. What leaves you cold just as much as it turns everyone else on?

But I'd like to add into the mixer, Ipods and Iphones.
They do not instantly make you cool. They do not mean you are better than anyone. They do not mean that you know more about technology than anyone else.
They mean you have been suckered into a brand, in the same way that you mock fat people for loving McDonalds, or stupid people for loving the Daily Mail and Jade Goody. You go wherever Steve Jobs goes, and spread his bible, unthinkingly, like his little minions.
Go fuck yourself and your stupid pretentious piece of plastic (or metal depending which 'gen' you bought) crap. It's probably made easier by there being an app for fucking your smug, cunt-like faces.
*Enter Apple fans stage right, for a jolly good flaming!

i'm in your gang. Can I add to the mix, people who compare Apple to PC's. An Apple Mac, is, for all intents and purposes, a PC. IF they're going to compare, then its MacOS vs Windows, which is what they really mean. I have a PC and it runs far better and far more reliably than any Mac I've ever used. Nothing crashes like a Mac crashed. I cannot for the life of me remember XP crashing properly - except maybe for hardware errors. Apps yes, but not the OS.

As if an Apple is too special to only be known as a computer, or lumped in with everything else that is exactly the same, just in black plastic, rather than white.
I do not have anything against the products, just the preachy users.

doesn't crash nowadays.
I haven't had a kernel panic in years.
But Macs aren't better. They're just different. It's a personal preference thing.

maybe, but I've never used as unpredictable a piece of software as one-year-old Windows. I'm not defending Macs by any means, but I'm perplexed by the Stockholm syndrome some Windows users exhibit.

Although I do have an iPod. Not for the lifestyle choice, or to show off (it stays firmly in my pocket most of the time), but for the fact that it holds a LOT more than any of the other mp3 players I could find.

and actually, I don't really have much against Ipods, more iphones in this category.
The thing I find funny about the ipod is the way people harp on about it being a revolutionary design, because you use a wheel rather than up and down buttons.
What is wrong with up and down?!

Couldn't agree more.
But what makes me laugh is that there seems to be a new, better version every month, which costs about £100 more and supersedes the £500 "Iphone Super XG 12.7 Ultra" you bought last week.

The spawn of Satan software that you have to use. iTunes. Such is its penetration, people now get lost when they try to play some music on my computer, and it loads Winamp, then they spend 10 minutes looking for the iTunes shortcut. It's not on my computer. It's slow, it doesn't work how *I* want it to, and no, I don't want to buy your overpriced tracks. I have a Napster subscription for that.

I own an iPod, but it was bought for me as a Christmas pressie by my lovely other half, so I am bound to use the thing.
The sound quality is poor, battery life questionable and iTunes can suck my unusually hairy cock.

and yes, I feel your pain

I have an iPhone 3G. When the time came for me to replace my old razor, I was in the market for a smartphone. While I wasn't on an x-year plan, I paid a flat rate for unlimited airtime as long as it was within my city and immediate surrounding area. Since I wanted to stay on that plan, the only smartphone that the carrier was offering was the iPhone, so I took it.
And it's just fine. Reception is good, solid battery life, holds my music so I don't also have to have the old iPod (not a brand whore, just the best of what was available when I was buying an mp3 player four years ago) rattling around in my pocket.
I was pretty sure I wouldn't watch movies on the thing, but I have while riding the train to and from work. I have some useful apps and some games on it to kill time when I've got time to kill. What's the big deal?
It's not a transcendant piece of tat, it's just a useful little toy in a candy package. I don't really care for using Macs, whether at work or at home, but what's the hate all about?
Hate the people who gush about them, don't hate the phone. Remember that these are likely the same people who once thought that something was cutting edge because it had blue LEDs. And you don't hate blue, do you?

Either way, the point is not that they aren't useful little devices, but that I just don't get why people bum them as much as they do. At the end of the day, they are just phones or MP3 players, and other brands do the job just as well, and better, without making the owners look like sycophantic, cult-like twats.

if you're finding a bunch of pompous posturing twits who think that owning a mass produced device makes them special, or people that go on and on about how great their phone is because it does *insert random commonly available feature here*, but I'd hate to think that if someone sees me pull my phone out of my pocket to check my email they think I'm a prick just because of the brand.

on Jobs. I have an Ipod (hell, it plays 30Gb of my music, it's great!) but I don't use iTunes. Any linux users out there - iPod + Hipo = music happiness. Just dump my mp3's on the iPod & listen away, and it won't delete my missus' collection if I plug hers in either. Screw you Jobs, the iPod is good, your megalomaniac software which wipes your tunes is utter fucking thievery.

The choice of morons who can't undestand the concept of variety, and buy something on the basis of it being shiny and nice looking. And because "other people said so, so it must be good".
The Archos 5 is infinitely more superior to the iPod. I have shown my Archos 5 to Apple "Fan Bois" that I know and it soon wiped the smug smile off their faces.
Not forgetting play video on a decent size screen instead of something the size of a postage stamp, deal with a wide variety of weird and wonderous video and audio codecs, and output through a TV in 720p Hi-Def. And, just drag and drop content without the need of a stupid program as the middle man, telling me what to do and locking me to one computer only.
Want an iPod Nano beater? Buy a Sansa Fuze 8gb, and buy a 8gb Micro SD card to double its capacity. They have a Micro SD card slot, and you could have a few of them and easily have "hot swappable" libraries of tunes. Stick them on a decent pair of Sennheiser earphones and it wins hands down. I got one for Pantenewoman's birthday and she loves it.
