This is a question I don't understand the attraction

Smaug says: Ricky Gervais. Lesbian pr0n. Going into a crowded bar, purely because it's crowded. All these things seem to be popular with everybody else, but I just can't work out why. What leaves you cold just as much as it turns everyone else on?

I desperately want to be in on it
There must be something in it, but I cqan't see the appeal of whisky. It tastes like chewing a very old pencil. My mate has toured most if not all the distilleries in Scotland and has dozens of bottles of whisky. I've sampled several quality blends and single malts and yet I can't get into it.

hear hear
it tastes worse than old pencil though.

you're mental
I'm finding out some shocking stuff about you today.

Personally
I can't get past the "somebody's swapped my drink for turps and it's stripping the skin off my lips" stage long enough to ponder the taste.

I'd say that's vodka
the cheap stuff too for less than £15 a bottle

Same for me
I've drunk some very good whisky and tried to like it - but I can't. I can tell the difference between good and bad no problem, but I still can't like it.

what makes it worse
is that I had the same opinion of wine, but I managed to crack that one and I keep telling myself I'll do the same with whisky

Yes
But may I say Ive always someone to teach/educate me. Im pretty sure Bells etc down the pub is appaling toss, but Id like to try "proper" whisky, just to see what Im missing.

I used
to think the same. My dad loves it - always has. Steers clear of it because he likes it so much.

It used to make me shudder and there was no way I could tell a good one from a bad one, but as I've got older, I can.

I'm starting to see the attraction with it, but it has to be what *they* would call a 'good one'.

I'm with you on this
Have tried some expensive single malts, some allegedly decent drams - but really can't get past the flavour. It's a waste of alcohol in my eyes.

Keep disliking it
All the more for me!

I agree
I can just about stomach JD and coke if I've already been drinking, but I was once handed a measure of very expensive Laphroaig with the same care and reverence you'd give the Holy Grail. My mates then sat there contentedly sipping this stuff and saying how marvellous it was and all I could think was - this tastes like bacon flavour turps.

Laphroaig
It tastes of fire! Or peat or something. There was a bottle acquired at a party once and I couldn't believe it tasted like that so I kept trying it. It still tasted of fire. Blehh.

I found that the only thing that helps...
...is to own your own bottle.. ownership cracked it for me!

I really disliked it beforehand though.

Yum, Yum Yum, Yum!
I love the stuff me! The good stuff that is, not the blends. I didn't like it either until I visited the Highland Park distillery on Orkney (best holiday desination on earth by the way) and was given a complimentary glass as the end of the tour. Drank it out of politeness and fell in love. Mind you at £25 a bottle it is an occasional treat.
