This is a question I don't understand the attraction

Smaug says: Ricky Gervais. Lesbian pr0n. Going into a crowded bar, purely because it's crowded. All these things seem to be popular with everybody else, but I just can't work out why. What leaves you cold just as much as it turns everyone else on?

On-Line gaming
I can't figure it out at all. Why does a game need to be played online to 'experience the full game'? I have no interest in being shot 100 times by a nasal, whining yank kid who is hell-bent on telling me how l33t he is.

Secondly, is the whole 'online experience' just a ruse by developers to trick us into not noticing that they couldn't be arsed to develop decent enemy AI?

Don't even get me started on MMOs - if you want to meet people, develop a career, and make money, why don't you get off your lazy arse and GET A PROPER JOB?

So true!
We have a trend of games where graphics and features are improving and story and AI are, for the most part, apparently stagnant.

Why do some games (I'm looking at you, Halo) not have multiplayer bots? They made AI for the single player mode, so why not adapt that for the people who don't have the internet connection for on-line multiplayer, nor enough people in the same room at the same time for regular LAN nights?

Quake Wars
has some very impressive AI.

I think it entirely depends upon the game
Deus Ex, my favourite game of all timeā„¢, has a completely spurious multiplayer which is to be avoided at all costs. Nobody would consider it an integral part of the experience. Competitive shooters like Counter-Strike or Team Fortress 2 entirely depend on their multiplayer modes, so if you don't want to play against other people, you can ignore them wholesale.

Other titles walk between these two poles. Some have a nice multiplayer that can enhance the experience; you could play Command & Conquer offline and enjoy it thoroughly, or play it online against others, or both. If the single-player is merely a vehicle for multiplayer, though, then we'd probably be better off without it entirely.
