This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Apparently...
In certain regiments of the British Army, to be an officer with them, you have to attend a social regimental dinner to make sure that you will fit in with the general comradeliness. Black tie/ mess dress, all the regimental silver, lots of drink to get past people's natural reserve & defences.

They mark you on your social skills, or to put it another way, have a check list of 'common' things that you can fail on, like failing a driving test. Apparently, the so-called HKLP fault is an end to any dream you might have of waving your sword at Lizzie...
