My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

AgreedBut it is possible. When I first arrived to Spain (and NOT for weather obsession, because I genuinely love Spanish language and culture) I found it incredibly hard to make friends. But I persevered, and now I am married to one!
Some people don't make any effort at all, but that's their choice if they want to miss out on the local wonders. My parents, for example, want to move out here but I know they will never get the lingo down, because at their age learning a new language is very hard.
In my opinion: annoying yes, common.. not really.
