This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Accent
If you want common, then listen to the Hull accent. Look on YouTube for Hull Accent. Watch the first vid, you'll see some people trying to speak with a Hull accent and sounding like John Prescott (who doesn't have a Hull accent, came from Wales originally and looks like Buzz Lightyear)

Go here instead:

I'm with you on that one.
I spent years trying to lose my Hull accent, now I sound like a Yank Yorkshirewoman. But at least it's not Hullian.

Very true.
Whats the difference between a sock and a camera?

A sock is for five toes (five ters) and a camera is for four toes (fer-ters)

I'm not sure if that joke works as well in writing :s.

I'm actually southern, but my Dad was brought up in Hessle Road. Every one down here seems to think he's got a Hull accent, and people in Hull think he's got an Essex accent. From a neutral standing point, I don't think he has either, It sounds more like a Lancaster accent to me.

After 6 years in Hull
my accent has become infected with the Hull accent. And with another 2 to go it's not going to change. My own accent now depresses me. I can no longer pronounce the word 'five' properly.

Here's a good example of the Hull accent too
