This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

De-badged BMW 3 series and Mercedes C Class
Because they're too ashamed to admit they could only afford the "poverty spec" model with the weedy engines and trim levels akin to a 1970s British Leyland bus.

Glaringly obvious by the lack of alloy wheels, and sporting "pretend alloy wheel" wheel trims or steel rims.

Quit trying to be "considerably richer than thou", and buy a normal marque of car that is better value for money with a better trim level.

"Bonus points" for being in Silver.

Nah mate it's an M-series Beemer, innit?
No. It's a 316 you have taken the badges off and put a spoiler on that you got off Ebay.

I have two mates who have recently bought cars
Both spent about five grand.

One spend three grand on a BMW 318i, and the change on getting it debadged, big alloys, lowered suspension and bright blue headlight bulbs. It's slow, noisy, uncomfortable and it can't get over speed bumps.

The other bought two Citroen Xantias (a 2.1TD and an Activa) and a Jaguar. All of them look a bit tatty but go like hell. Oh, and he spent the 1500 quid change on insurance, new tyres and getting the Jag and the Activa valeted.

I'm not sure which is more common, having a barried-up BMW or having three cars sitting out the front...

To be fair
you do see top end BMWs without badges, probably to discourage neds from stealing them because they assume they're poverty spec models.

M3
This is the very reason BMW made the new M3 and covered in M3 badges so thats it's clear it's not a crappy normal 3 series twat wagon driven by a scrubber who thinks it's an M3.

Bonus points
For the word "Twat Wagon". Maybe I should have shortened the entire post to

De-Badged BMW 3 series & Mercedes C Class = twat wagon.

Interesting how
in Germany, they tend to de-badge the top spec models, as being discreet about your wealth is considered cooler than showing off about it.

I don't know if they have chavs in Germany.

Mercedes
Also used to hide the exhausts under the rear bumper so the proles couldn't work out if the de-badged S Class was a poor persons's 6 cylinder, or a bloated plutocrat V12 monster.

Or get a real job rather than scrounging benefit...
...then you could perhaps afford a real German car with a decent trim level. Something like... oh... the A4 Quattro in SE trim (for comfort) or S-line trim (for handling if you don't mind a hard ride).

Of course I'd take an Audi A4 over a Mondeo... but I'd take a 2 litre Mondeo over a 1.6 A4. Believe it or not they did make an A4 with a 1.6 litre engine, a car that weighs about 1.6 tons. 0-60 takes about 16 seconds in it, compared to 7.5 seconds in my 2 litre A4.

Audi
People do tend to point and shout cock at German saloons and most Audi's including my R8 which I think rules. I hear what your saying having a 2 litre Mondeo over a 1.6 Audi, but I'd go with the x type Jag over the Mondeo as it's quicker, but go 3 litre for the 4 wheel drive and powwwwwer!
