My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

My guess...Is that we're dealing with someone who's - at most - 21, who's been privately (and expensively) educated, probably lives somewhere in the home counties, wears brown trousers out of choice, aspires to be a partner in an accountancy firm, watches arts programmes on BBC4 without really understanding them, secretly admires Melanie Phillips and Quentin Letts... and is called Henry.
